Most would agree that we all benefit from a cultural move away from self-absorption where we embrace kindness that supports ourselves and others. But what do we do first to create that cultural change? Good news is that change starts from deep within each of us where we can control the choices we instigate. We transform from within, as grace supports us through even the most difficult challenges in life. Tangible joy becomes our deep light and energy that benefits others around us.
Corrie ten Boom (1892 – 1983), a Dutch watchmaker and author of The Hiding Place, hid Jewish people in her home during World War II. She was caught and sent to a Nazis concentration camp, where she found and shared God’s grace. While imprisoned for her belief that all people are precious to God and all are created equal, she found comfort in God’s grace. Rather than try to convert Jewish people to her faith, Corrie simply helped create a hiding place for them behind a false wall for those in danger.
Corrie became part of the Dutch underground resistance network that saved more than 800 Jews. The Gestapo arrested Corrie, with her sister Betsie, and father Casper who died ten days later. Held for months in solitary confinement, Corrie would make friends with cockroaches and rats to stay sane. Devastated, she learned her 16 year old sister Betsie died, and then suddenly Corrie was released 12 days later. It was eventually discovered that her release was a clerical error and that a few days later every woman left behind was gassed by the Nazis.
Ten Boom returned home to open her doors to people on the fringes of society by setting up a rehabilitation center for concentration-camp survivors and to help those without jobs. Corrie found personal strength and kindness in God’s grace and that led her to serve others who were less fortunate.
Grace opens our mind and awakens our intrapersonal or intuitive intelligence. Surprisingly, it often starts by doing something that makes us happy. Grace opens a yellow brick road toward spirited joyfulness and divine delight! It’s not the absence of suffering but it is the creation of inner ability to flourish because we are loved unconditionally by a creator who cares and loves for an eternity.
When we take time and deliberately act in ways that add personal delight, we activate our brain’s aha chemical serotonin, which adds joy and meaning to all we do.
We ditch stress in favor of the kind of calm trust that sees inner healing and enjoys growth on a regular basis. We tend to see our creator, God pretty much in every key aspect of our lives. We understand how nothing that comes our way is accidental. We keep calm, and look for possibilities to resolve stubborn problems. We risk running with more of our dreams and we learn to listen to and access more of God’s transformational courage. We live our best lives and help others to enjoy life more too. Heaven expands into images of an eternal party rather than an everlasting court!
It usually starts within a quiet time and an inner space to rest, recreate and reflect! Just by listening carefully to grace within safer, calmer spaces, we rehearse new steps we may take toward caring more about those around us. Grace will jettison us toward opportunities to practice inner kindness that extends to serve, care and support others, all from within gratitude for living pools of God’s endless rich blessings that spring up within and benefit all creation.
Grace anchored Corrie throughout tough times, as it moors each of us in unconditional love and goodness so that falsehoods that come from greed, ego or self-interest tend to fade in its presence.
