Strong and caring leaders often remind us to help restore and heal the soul of our nation. Have you heard that call lately?
When President Biden spoke of national soulful restoration recently, I began to wonder what ultimate questions would we resolve to heal the soul of our nation? Perhaps the first critical question is, “What needs changing?”
The answer to what needs changing, leads to an actionable follow-up question.
What’s my role if I and others are to help our nation heal?
As I see it, knowing we are beloved children of God certainly changes our lives and alters this key question’s response.
By asking a question about what needs to change and then living or engaging empathetic and compassionate responses to that question, we begin to see possible pathways into healing.
We will likely first decipher who our nation serves best, who is left behind, and why we feel as we do about possible solutions. When we begin to clarify what personal actions will get us deeper than superficial fixes, we set up highly targeted solutions to contribute to the quest of healing a broken community or culture.
We know that grace with its unconditional love is available to us from a higher power. We know healing starts within each of us and is not about either converting or blaming others. Healing ourselves starts with an assurance that grace is a gift given at conception and it lasts for eternity.
It cannot be earned and does not disappear when we fail to deserve it, so our question becomes, How do we access grace in ways that awaken loving-kindness, empathy, healing and hope? The results? President Trudeau said it best after the Queen’s passing, “In a complicated world her steady grace and resolve brought comfort and strength to us all. Canada is mourning.”
