Dr. Haidong Liang wrote the following forward to these interactive guidebooks! It is with great pleasure that I introduce “Seniors’ Growth Mindset Guidebook” by my esteemed mentor and friend, Dr. Ellen Weber. This guide is more than a book; it is a practical tool for seniors eager to embrace challenges, grow grit and grace, and live their best lives.

In my role as Executive Director of the Westend Seniors Activity Centre and as a gerontologist, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges that many seniors face. With over 7.8 million Canadians aged 65 and over, issues like mental health and social isolation are more pressing than ever. What concerns me even more is that statistics show 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental illness annually, and by age 40, 1 in 2 have faced such challenges.

This is where Dr. Weber’s guide makes a profound difference. With over 50 years of experience in brain-compatible learning and living, and having touched diverse populations around the globe, she demystifies complex neuroscience and translates it into practical, enjoyable activities that anyone can incorporate into daily life. What truly sets this guide apart is its accessibility. This kind of training is typically reserved for leadership development and executive coaching – programs that are often expensive and inaccessible to the general public. Dr. Weber generously breaks down barriers that often keep valuable knowledge out of reach for many.

The guide’s friendly and conversational tone mirrors Dr. Weber’s dynamic personality. Reading it feels like sitting down for a friendly chat with Ellen herself – warm, encouraging, and full of insightful gems. It is practical without being prescriptive, inviting readers to explore and grow at their own pace. The activities are not only effective but also fun, fostering a sense of curiosity and adventure that can reignite a zest for life.

I have had the privilege of collaborating with Dr. Weber in creating mental health programs tailored specifically for seniors, including expanding this guide’s reach to diverse ethnic and racialized groups. This guide also serves as a valuable resource for families and communities, bridging generational gaps.

On a personal note, I experienced the transformative impact of Dr. Weber’s support during the most challenging period of my life—the passing of my father in 2023. This personal journey deepened my appreciation for her work and reinforced the vital role a growth mindset plays in overcoming adversity.

I am honored to pen this foreword and to stand alongside Dr. Weber in this important work. Together, we are bridging the gap between research and practical application, making a significant difference in the lives of seniors and beyond. We invite you to join a movement toward embracing new possibilities, cultivating resilience, and living life to the fullest.”
