Are Senior Centers Growth Mindset Cultures?

How many seniors tell us they long to join a local care center? Or how many crave a move into senior living sites? If the answer is few or none, then we may wish to ask why.

Some say that senior live-in centers are hugely money makers for business owners or out-of-touch managers who run them. Others say that bureaucrats use our growing senior facilities to gain personal and political capital. I say that times have changed and we will help more seniors to thrive if we learn and adapt from changes that benefit senior minds and emotions. What do you say?

Check out nine steps that would help us to create senior growth mindset cultures that include and activate the awesome wit and wisdom found in mind and emotions of seniors.

What could we do better to include growth mindset practices that benefit more seniors? How might our senior sites and residences welcome and support more of an elderly person’s genuine potential?

A senior emergency room leader spoke up at my brain conference and Jade’s story summed up the best of growth mindset examples we seniors enjoy. Jade faced the problem of daily complaints from staff about too many patients, too few resources, and too negligent staff (or leadership) support. At first Jade tried to help improve these situations on case by case attempts. However, the more exhausted she grew the more complaints seemed to roll in.

Over time and with suggestions from wise colleagues, Jade recognized her toxic and stagnant workplace was more a matter of mindset than of limitations being cited in daily complaints. For Jade’s group (and for our situation, the solutions come from spotting the problem and proposing a solution to lead, engage, or support.

Jade solved her problem by proposing a possibility. Early the next morning, when they gathered to set goals for their day, Jade suggested that she was no longer able to hear problems without any alternative and doable solution they could all try. The practical solution would emanate from the problem proposer and if possible would be led by that same person.

In true growth mindset fashion, Jade’s cynics shrunk almost immediately, transformational leaders began to step up far faster, and laughter became the norm as innovative proposals were tweaked by diverse thinkers and doers. What problem is standing in your way today, that would find a growth mindset solution in this guidebook that would create a winning way forward for you and for all concerned?
