The story is told of a mother who embarrassed her teenage son because she wore an ugly pirate-like patch over her right eye.
After his friends teased him that his mom looked like Captain Hook, the boy refused to bring friends home again. Increasingly, the sight of his mom brought disgust, and no matter how kind and caring she was, he recoiled from her more and more.
At 17, the boy moved out and refused to return calls from his mom, whose messages of missing him decreased over time. Soon after his own son came along, his mom’s neighbor called and told him that his mother had died that week. A letter and her few goods were there for him, if he wished to pick them up before her tiny cabin was repossessed.
The note read:
“I am so sorry that we lost contact son, because I missed you every day we were apart. I am also sorry that my eye patch caused you shame with your friends. After cancer as a baby when your eye was removed I gave you mine to spare you the shame of wearing an ugly patch to hide the socket.
My gift that vital day came with the same love that God’s enormous grace came to help me cope with the sadness from not sharing my latter years with you. I’m so proud of you son, and so thankful that grace restored me to survive life with one eye and strengthened you to enter and discover the wonders of a whole new world with two.
