Run from lectures – Roundtable 41

Comments Off on Run from lectures – Roundtable 41

Are you looking for lectures or learning? The reason I ask is because brain research shows how lectures rarely go together with learning as we’d once hoped. That leads to the next obvious question, “Have you ever wonder why we give talks and lectures as if unaware that listeners retain less than 5% from such delivered facts?”

William Yeats inspired a more useful question when he said, “Learning is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” How would you facilitate learning that ignites fires for participants. Hopefully this interactive roundtable will spark a few new ideas.

Ask the lecturer in this video and he will likely say he engages listeners.  He might even go on to suggest today’s audiences expect too much and give too little. Ask listeners and they may support these 100 reasons to run hard from lectures!

But when we support genuine efforts to transform lectures into active tasks –we’ll never look back! Or when we coach a radical move away from delivery of facts to discovering new applications for those facts – we tell magical stories about how students and insights suddenly leap into life!

Most agree that change from telling to doing is rarely for the faint of heart, though.
